By the River Piedra by Paulo Coelho

By the river Piedra I sat down and wept, is the fifth book by Paulo Coelho that I read. Other books by the same author are ‘The Alchemist’, ‘Veronica Decides to Die’, ‘The Valkyries’ and ‘Eleven Minutes’. In the true Paulo Coelho genre, this book talks about the Miracles. Miracles happen in our lives daily. Also how each of us has the power to create miracles in this world.

The protagonist meets her childhood love after twelve years and the story revolves around the 7 days after she meets. The story slowly progresses toward the way she grows in those seven days. Especially those seven days and how he, her childhood love, transcends everything to her that he has learned in all those years through his travels and his experimentation. His experiences and his experimentations with religion and attaining the power to heal people.

How do they both go through the pain of not knowing what has happened in the other person’s life? How she at times feels that the ‘Pain of losing’ and ‘Pain of waiting’ are both bad, but worse is ‘not knowing’ which one you have to go through. Coelho also talks about the feminine side of God as most of the major religions in the world have only looked at God as a masculine power.

The book provides a very well-crafted emotional and mental map. Mental map, especially of what the lovers go through. Furthermore, how they make each other grow. True love needs complete surrender and no fear in the heart of losing the loved one. Thus, it is not important to be just together, but at the same time, it is equally important to grow together and help each other grow.

  3. I read most of the books of Paulo Coehlo books. But I only like four novels.
Veronika decides to die is also interesting.

  4. I stopped reading in the middle the novel ADULTERY by Paulo Coelho. But I don’t think the author betrayed the readers. In professional writing, it happens sometimes. Anuradha madam knows this more than me.
