Preeti Shenoy is one of the famous woman authors in India. Among the top five highest selling authors in the country, she has written 9 novels till now. She also writes short stories and poems which are published in various magazines. She is also a blog writer. Her genres are fiction as well as nonfiction. The Secret Wish List is the fourth novel written by Preeti Shenoy.

The story revolves around Diksha, who once used to be a very passionate girl. She was ambitious, enthusiastic, and always positive. Her life was full of excitement and adventures which she shared with her best friend Tanu. Whenever they were together the rest of the world didn’t matter. In short her life was like any other teenage girl. Until Ankit enters her life, which makes her feel more important and special. She finds herself doing things she had never imagined. Caught in the chain of events the one innocent mistake turns her world upside down. And the life she had just started exploring is snatched away from her. It leads her to a life she had never dreamt of. Suddenly her whole life seems isolated.

Being helpless and hopeless she surrenders to destiny and marries Sandeep. And spends the rest of her life attending to the needs of Sandeep and Abhay, their 9-year-old son. She had almost engrossed herself in this daily routine until one day her cousin Vibha made her realize that she should step out and enjoy life and do something for herself. From this comes up the secret wish list, that once again leaves her with unexpected twist and turns of life and pushes her into a dramatic chain of events. And with it returns her past which she could not forget all these years.

The Secret Wish List is full of twist and turns. It’s all about family, friendship, love, fears, overcoming fears and passion. A roller coaster ride of feelings and emotions. It’s a struggle between your responsibilities and your dreams. It’s about what you are and what you are not. It is the journey of finding your true self.

I personally think that every individual should get a chance to rectify their mistakes. They should be given a chance to explain their self. We cannot just judge people on the bases of what we see or hear about them.

The path that Diksha chooses to find her happiness feels incorrect to me. But I guess the situation in which she is trapped and the way Sandeep treats her, automatically leads her to take such steps. On the other hand, the way her mother-in-law understands and supports her decision is quite commendable. After being humiliated by her family it is Sandeep’s mother who goes against her son and supports Diksha.

One thing I learned from this novel is that every relation without love or care eventually becomes just a formality, wherein both the individuals dutifully fulfill their responsibilities. Every relation requires equal efforts from both individuals. The second thing is that every individual should stand up for their rights or should voice their thoughts because whatever the situation be only you alone can help yourself out of it.

The language of the novel is quite easy, some difficult words here and there. But given the situation, you can understand the words and grab the meaning easily. I also liked the author’s narration skills. It almost keeps you hooked to the storyline.

  1. Anu mam, more than the book your review change my way of thinking on this book .It takes me to another understanding level. Previously I was thinking the girl in the book ,protagonist Deeksha was not at right in her place then I realise you cannot judge a person in regard to the mistake she has made in her life, some mistakes where the consequences of mishappenings and misbehaviours from the partner. Lack of love can alongshore a person to a fellow who can drive you to other world and can make you feel felicity

  2. all are talking about the marital predicament of women and domination of men. but nobody bothers about the actions of women creating unpleasantness and stains in relationship of men at home. all women want to be independent and who the people are against such women? In their independent act, they cause indelible sadness in the hearts of their husbands. like men, women are also very bad in their attitudes. i am the concrete example.
